Interpretation boundary
The non-obvious assembly is scale separation: active-fire counts, elevated smoke in the column (model/satellite), and surface AQI can disagree when smoke stays aloft. NASA itself notes altitude matters for whether skies look smoky while surface impacts stay limited. This page does not estimate hospital visits, school closures, or mortality.
Unknowns
- Which fraction of each city’s peak AQI was wildfire smoke versus local emissions that week.
- Model brown-carbon fields are not the same quantity as monitor PM2.5.
- Fire perimeter growth after the animation window is outside this snapshot.
